Purposeful and functional, or purposeful and nonfunctional?
Cambridge dictionary states the meaning of nonfunctional as; “not working, or not working in the correct or usual way.” Therefore, the meaning of functional is the opposite, working in the correct or usual way. Purposeful means, full of purpose, value and usefulness.
Imagine buying a complex gadget without the user manual. How well will you operate it? Let us look at a phone as an illustration. A phone is named after its purpose. It is not equipped to operate on its own, it operates only when being used by a human being. It was not designed to serve its purpose, but the user’s purpose/needs.
- It must be connected to a service provider and or internet service.
- It must be plugged into a power source (charged battery) to have the power needed for it to function as it should.
- It must be used by someone for it to be useful. It serves the needs of the owner/user, not its own needs.
Likewise, children of God are called by the name of their Father, God. They are created in His likeness and image for His purpose and service, not theirs or others.
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” Colossians 1:16 NKJV
For human beings to operate in the fullness of their created purpose…
- They must be connected to Jesus Christ our Lord and savior. This is their service provider. In this way they can serve God.
- They must be plugged into a power source who is God the Holy Spirit, to have the power needed for them to know and understand their purpose and to fulfill it successfully.
- They must be led by the Holy Spirit for them to know how to serve God, not themselves. No one knows what God needs but the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we must be in His hands to be useful.
“For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:11 NKJV
“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8:13-14 NKJV
Questions to ask yourself:
Am I connected to Christ Jesus?
Am I filled with the Holy Spirit?
Am I serving God with my life, led by the Holy Spirit?
Are you full of purpose but not operating in your created purpose? Or… Are you full of purpose and operating in the fullness of your created purpose?
“He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 AMP
“So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is our lot in life. And no one can bring us back to see what happens after we die.” Ecclesiastes 3:22 NLT
